Burke is a commemorative bear who was named after a CF Angel, Burke P. Derr.
Here is his story:
Burke Patrick Derr was born on June 19th 1978 with cystic fibrosis and was given only weeks to live.
One Day received a letter from Boyds Collection saying that they were naming a bear after him, the Burke P Bear.
Unknown to Burke, 2 of his friends had written a letter to Boyds Collection telling them of Burke's CF and his collection of close to 150 Boyds Bears which he collected over 6 years.
Burke was ecstatic about the honour, however the Burke Bear wasn't going to be available until the fall of 1977, and in May Burke's health began failing.
The Boyds staff put great pressure on the factory in China to get the original sample to the US. The one and only prototype sample was delivered to the hospital a week before Burke died.
Burke's spirit lives on through the Burke Bear, and it is our job to uphold the honour of owning this special bear.
It is Burke's mission to travel the world, and we are taking him on a tour of 2 countries he has never been to...Ireland, and Spain! :)
Eve is very excited about this and has made BIG plans for her and Burke!
